ALTS Consultation

Alfred Lord Tennyson School move to one site

Dear Parents

I am writing to inform you of our intentions to move Alfred Lord Tennyson School (ALTS) to one site at Alfred Street from September 2025, meaning the Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will no longer be at the Tennyson Road site. Alterations would need to take place to the Alfred Street site prior to a merger to make the site suitable for KS1 and Reception children. We are working with North Northamptonshire Council about the building project required so that all pupils and staff can be on one site. This would entail a purpose-built Reception outdoor learning provision, separate entrance and exit into the building and new toilets being built suitable for younger children. Any building work would take place in the next academic year and would be in phases to minimise the disruption to KS2 children. As we did with the roof work, children may need to temporarily relocate to different classrooms whilst the works take place. The alterations would also include redecoration of existing classrooms and we would hope that much of the large-scale work would take place in the holidays. Risk assessments would be in place to ensure the safety of pupils and staff and regularly reviewed.

Following the formal amalgamation of Tennyson Road Infant School and Alfred Street Junior School, we have continuously reviewed our provision and our intentions are now at the stage where we wish to invite your views and questions regarding this proposal. The consultation will run from 16th April to 17th May 2024. During this time, you will be able to ask questions about the timeframe and building works.

As you may be aware, with the rise in living costs, there has been a strain on school budgets nationally and maintaining two sites does have financial implications on the maintenance of the two buildings. There were many considerations in reaching the decision to move to one site including:

  • Improved integration of pupils and staff so that we feel like ‘one school’.
  • Providing our Infant children with a bigger space.
  • Make it easier for staff and parents when holding whole school events.
  • Easier for staff to share resources which would also cut down costs.
  • Making the start and end of the day easier for parents who currently have children on both sites.

We are also taking into account parent view from our survey which indicated parents would prefer us to be on one site.

In proposing this move to one site, we are grateful to North Northamptonshire Council for their support in ensuring that we can develop these plans in a sustainable manner.

The plan is for Alfred Lord Tennyson School to open on one site in September 2025.

If you would like to submit any thoughts, comments, questions or concerns regarding the intention to move to one site, we would be grateful for your responses. After the consultation's closure, we will respond formally to any issues raised and communicate our next steps.

Thank you as always for your support, we believe that this move will best meet the needs for our children and staff. As ever, ALTS aims to provide the very best education possible for every student and child whom we serve, and even during times of challenge we will look for ways to improve and enhance our existing provision.

Yours sincerely,
